United Nations Office on Drugs & Crimes conducted a two-day workshop themed "Consultative Session on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism and Gender Mainstreaming in Criminal Justice response to Terrorism" in collaboration with National Counter Terrorism Center and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The guest of honour of the workshop is Mr. Javid Faisal, the head of International Relations Department of MoFA. The team of experts from UNODC is headed by Hidemi Yuki, programme officer of UNODC. 35 participants from 30 organisations comprising of government institutions, public companies, and NGOs participated in this two-day event.

The participants were briefed on the current and emerging threat environment in the Maldives and the South Asia with regards to Violent Extremism. Furthermore, the participation of women and the civil sector in preventing Violent Extremism and in the effort of women in criminal justice response terrorism were also discussed. Discussions were also held, with the members of relevant authorities and the civil sector actors in the effort needed for victim support and de-radicalization, rehabilitation and re-integration of returnees Foreign Terrorist Fighters and their families.
