Deputy Director General of Counter Terrorism

BG Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef

Brigadier Genera Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef was appointed as the Principal Director of Military Intelligence of the Maldives National Defence Force on the 10th of January 2016. In addition, to this, he also holds the appointments of Commanding Officer of the Special Assessment Unit and the Deputy Director General of the National Counter Terrorism Centre. He is also a member of the Promotion Board and the Advisory Board to the Defence Minister and Chief of Defence Force.

Born on the 17th of April 1964, BG Abdul Raheem graduated from Majeediyya School prior to his enlistment in the MNDF in 1985. He had been a prefect, a house captain at the school in addition to being a Regimental Sergeant Major of the School Cadet Corps.

During the initial days of his military service, the BG served as a telephone operator. Not long afterwards, his potential was noted and he was given the opportunity to attend a radio repair course in the United States, in which he attained first place. He was duly promoted as a technician upon his return to the Maldives.

Over the course of his military career, BG Abdul Raheem has completed several military courses. This includes the domestic NCO Cadre course, the Signals Young Officer and Mid-career courses in Pakistan, the Command and Staff Course at the Sri Lanka Defence Services Command and Staff College and the Defence Management Course at the College of Defence Management in Secunderabad, India. He is also an alumnus of the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies, Hawaii, United States, having completed the Advanced Security Cooperation course there.

Workshops and Seminars he attended include, the Using I.C.T for Effective Disaster Management Asia Forum 2006 in Sri Lanka, the Spectrum Management Seminar in Hawaii US and the Multinational Communication Interoperability Programs in Singapore, Thailand, and Nepal. This is in addition to the Regional meeting on the United Nations Program for action on small arms and light weapons in Indonesia and a Media Seminar in Sri Lanka.

BG Abdul Raheem's has has several prestigious appointments in the past. He has commanded the Special Protection Group, MNDF Southern Area, the Military Police, the Media and Publishing Service, the Ordnance Service and the Communication Electronics and Information Technology Service. He has also served as the Acting Commandant of Service Corps, the Principal Director of C4 Systems and Civil Military Relations (Principal Director J6) at the Integrated Headquarters, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). His other appointments include being the Spokesperson for Maldives National Defence Force, the Vice Chairperson of MNDF Welfare Governing Board and the Chairperson of the Grievance Board.

In recognition of his many years of continuing and dedicated service, he has been decorated many times. As such, he has been honored with the Presidential Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Dedicated Service Medal, the Defence Force Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the 3rd November Medal and the Centenary Medal. Ribbons that he has been awarded include the Ribbon for Skill, the Achievement Ribbon, the Special Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Ribbon, the Defence Force Service Ribbon, the Dedicated Service Ribbon, the Long Service Ribbon and the Presidential Ribbon.

BG Abdul Raheem is married to and blessed with a son.
