Tourism Sector Security Enhancement Workshop 2017



NCTC Collaborates with Ministry of Tourism and MATI
to host Tourism Sector Security Enhancement Workshop 2017.

The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), held the 'Tourism Sector Security Enhancement Workshop 2017.' The workshop was also supported by the Maldives Police Service (MPS), Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Media and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

The 'Tourism Sector Security Enhancement Workshop 2017’ was aimed at fostering closer collaboration among the key stakeholders engaged in providing tourism security, including resort and city hotel security executives, hoteliers, and security and law enforcement agencies, including NCTC, MNDF, MPS, Maldives Immigration, Maldives Customs and the Aviation Security Command. In addition to this, key government ministries, including the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the Ministry of Education, as well as higher education institutions like the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) and Maldives National University (MNU) participated in the workshop.

The opening ceremony of the workshop was officiated by Minster of Tourism Honorable Moosa Zameer. In his speech, Minister Zameer highlighted the importance of enhancing the security of the tourism sector, and to establish collaborative and cooperative mechanisms within the industry, and between the law enforcement authorities. Minister Zameer stressed on the need to ensure the security of the tourists to sustain the industry and remain as one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

The Secretary General of MATI, Mr. Ahmed Nazeer, in his remarks, pointed out the need to address potential security threats such as terrorism and radicalization, and expressed gratitude for the government's effort on this front, especially the establishment of NCTC with a clear mandate to pursue counter terrorism and counter radicalization. Mr. Nazeer touched on the key role that NCTC plays at the national level, and expressed confidence in the efforts to enhance tourism security by working closely with inter-governmental and tourism industry partners.
