NCTC launches National Strategy on Preventing
and Countering Violent Extremism

Minister of Defence and National Security Adam Shareef Umar launched the National Strategy on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism, at a press event held by NCTC today. In his remarks, Minister Adam Shareef highlighted the several important policy and institutional developments attained under the leadership of His Excellency President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayoom, including the ratification of the Anti-Terrorism Act, and the establishment of NCTC. He further highlighted the significance of the State Policy on Terrorism and Violent Extremism, which was promulgated in June 2016.

Minister Adam Shareef stated that the National Strategy on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism which was launched today, marked yet another significant development in the national efforts on this important front. He commended the Director General of NCTC, Brigadier General Zakariyya Mansoor, and the inter-agency team that worked on developing the strategy. Furthermore, he urged the stakeholders to contribute and fully participate in the implementation of this strategy.

In his remarks, Brigadier General Zakariyya Mansoor outlined the key components of the strategy. He described the ways, means and ends, and stated that the strategic intent of this national document was aimed at maintaining and enhancing a progressive, tolerant, inclusive and moderate Muslim community. He also highlighted the key strategic focus areas, including P/CVE diplomacy, engagements with civil society, community-based law enforcement and counter messaging. General Mansoor also thanked the inter-agency working group that were engaged in formulating the strategy.
